Illinois House Party Shooting Kills One, Injures 10 Others

One man died and 10 others suffered injuries after a shooting occurred at a house party in Calumet City, Illinois.

Calumet City police said they responded to a call at 1:50 a.m. Sunday about a shooting, The Chicago Tribune reported.

About 100 to 150 people had gathered in the basement of the house when the shooting happened, leaving Dewayne Purnell, 19, dead.

Purnell was taken to Margaret Health in Hammond, Ind., where the coroner said he died at 2:37 a.m. from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said most other victims did not have life-threatening injuries, but they could not provide the names, ages, genders or hospital information of the victims.

Furthermore, the police have not apprehended any suspects, but said the shooting happened after an argument broke out at the party.

Police said the shooting might have been gang-related, and one of the home-owners was home at the time, ABC7 reported.

Purnell's father said he never lets his son go out, but permitted him to visit a friend Saturday night because Dewayne was set to leave for the military in nine days.

The police continue to investigate the shooting, and the South Suburban Task Force has been called in to lead the investigation, The Chicago Tribune reported.
