The NFL rumor mill is about to kick into full gear as we inch ever closer to the end of the latest football season.
Coaches and players will be fired, hired and everything in between, all before the final snap of the season occurs for playoff-less teams next week.
For one such downtrodden franchise, the NFL doom and gloom has already begun - according to a recent rumor from Adam Schefter, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and general manager John Idzik are both very much "in jeopardy" of losing their jobs and owner Woody Johnson is already preparing for a future without either guy.
"Jets owner Woody Johnson is preparing to hire former Texans and Redskins GM Charley Casserly as a consultant in the event the organization decides to make any changes, per league sources," Schefter wrote in a Facebook post early on Monday. "The jobs of Jets head coach Rex Ryan and John Idzik both are very much in jeopardy and, should the Jets make any changes, Johnson would be ready to move forward with the football expertise and manpower he would need surrounding him."
So, Johnson isn't necessarily making any changes, he's just preemptively bringing in a guy to take over in case he later decides to make changes...
Huh. Makes...sense?
The 66-year-old Casserly spent 23 seasons as a member of the Washington Redskins organization, during which time the team appeared in four Super Bowls. He started as an unpaid intern under George Allen and eventually worked his way up to general manager, a position he attained in 1989 and was relieved of a decade later.
He then helmed the expansion Houston Texans to a moderate amount of success from 2002 to 2006, a tenure which may be best remembered for Casserly's decision to draft eventual quarterback bust David Carr first-overall.
With his wealth of NFL knowledge, should the Jets decided to part ways with either or both of Ryan or Idzik, Casserly can provide ample assistance to Johnson as he and his franchise attempt to move forward.
