Brett Favre and the inevitable reunion with the Green Bay Packers is getting closer. Favre, who recently admitted fault in the 2008 messy divorce with Green Bay, praised quarterback Aaron Rodgers on Thursday and predicted Rodgers to "shatter" most of his records, NFL.com reports. As the relationship heals with Green Bay, Favre's Packers jersey could be retired as early as this year.
Favre spoke on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Thursday and praised Rodgers and the job he's done thus far under center.
"Aaron has played extremely well, probably even better than anyone anticipated, but I knew he was capable of that and that's why they drafted him," Favre said. "Barring any injury he'll shatter everything I ever did there except for maybe consecutive games. But the guy has been tremendous, great move on their part."
Favre also dispelled any notion of friction between Rodgers and himself.
"There were no problems between Aaron and I," Favre said. "I had no problem with him becoming the next quarterback for the Packers. It was bound to happen at some point. I have no problems with the success that he's had. In fact, I'm proud of him."
The Future Hall of Famer seems to be saying all the right things as he and the Packers work on mending their relationship. As the bad blood settles, the likelihood of Green Bay soon retiring Favre's No. 4 jersey increases - it might even happen this season.
"We want (Favre) back in the family," Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy told reporters in May. "... We're hopeful to have (Favre) back in the fold and get him back involved in the organization soon."
Asked about soon retiring Favre's jersey, Murphy said: "It's got to be the right time for him and us. That will happen."
Given all the bridge repairing that's taken place during the offseason, it's becoming probable that the old gunslinger steps onto Lambeau Field this year to have his jersey retired.
