If you're an Oakland Raiders fan, you might want to employ some selective memory when looking back on this season. Forget the 0-10 start and, instead, focus on the 3-2 record the team has posted in the last five weeks.
This small surge of life from the Raiders may have been enough to save general manager Reggie McKenzie's job. The team will begin its search for a new head coach at season's end, but it appears as if they are set at GM for at least one more season.
"There was speculation about his job security (which is fair, given Oakland's 11-36 record since he took over) but owner Mark Davis said he will wait until after the season is over to evaluate everything," wrote Vic Tafur of SFGate.com.
"I still think there is a very good chance McKenzie gets a fourth season.
"Davis told The Chronicle in March that his team didn't have an identity or any foundation players. Asked Saturday night...if that had been addressed this season, Davis said, 'Absolutely.'"
However, despite the above optimism, there is still a chance McKenzie could be out of a job. If the team hires a coach who they grant complete control of football operations, it's likely that he'll want someone he knows and trusts in the front office.
Oakland's top head coaching choice is Jim Harbaugh, who is probably searching for such a set up after his relationship deteriorated with San Francisco 49ers GM Trent Baalke.
The Raiders will close out the regular season this Sunday in Colorado against the Denver Broncos.
