Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Ian Kennedy is suspended for 10 games for his role in Tuesday night's brawl with the Los Angeles Dodgers. Kennedy is among eight players and personnel suspended for the fracas, including Eric Hinske, Ronald Belisario, managers Don Mattingly and Kirk Gibson, and hitting coach Mark McGwire, Yahoo! Sports reports.
The complete list of suspensions is as follows:
Diamondbacks: pitcher Ian Kennedy, 10-game suspension; infielder Eric Hinske; five-game suspension; manager Kirk Gibson, one-game suspension.
Dodgers: pitcher J.P Howell, two-game suspension; slugger Skip Schumaker, two-game suspension; hitting coach Mark McGwire, two-game suspension; pitcher Ronald Belisario, one-game suspension; manager Don Mattingly, one-game suspension.
All players and personnel involved were also fined an undisclosed amount, including Dodgers' Zack Greinke and Yasiel Puig. The punishments can be appealed.
Tempers flared when Kennedy hit Puig with a pitch, which deflected off his shoulder and struck his nose. When Greinke took the mound in the next inning, the pitcher retaliated and, after three tries, hit D-Backs catcher Miguel Montrero on the back. Both teams stormed the field but the situation diffused without any punches being thrown.
No warning was issued by any umpire.
Kennedy then hit Greinke near the head with a pitch the very next inning. Both benches and bullpens rushed the field and the massive brawl ensued.
"Puig gets hit in the face, Montero gets hit, it should have been really over at this point," Mattingly told reporters after the game.
Kennedy and Gibson were immediately ejected. The umpires later ejected Puig, McGwire, Belisario and D-backs coach Turner Ward once the all the brawlers dispersed.
After the game, Kennedy denied intentionally hitting any batter. Greinke declined to comment.
In the video, you can see Belisario throwing punches, an upset Puig storming into the fight and McGwire grabbing Gibson by the jersey and shouting at him.
