'Star Trek 3': Release Date Locked and Loaded

Trekkies will be rejoining Kirk, Spock, Scotty, Bones and the rest of the USS Enterprise crew on the big screen come July 8, 2016, according to a report at Variety.

The third film in the rebooted "Star Trek" series is currently the only major film scheduled for that date, opening a week after Steven Spielberg's "The BFG" and Warner Bros.' new take on "Tarzan," and a week before the fifth (there's really that many of those movies?) "Ice Age" film hits screens worldwide.

This will thus allow the film to coincide with the franchise's 50-year anniversary, as the original "Star Trek" television series debuted on Sept. 8, 1966 on NBC and it aired for three seasons.

Today's announcement of a solid release date comes a day after Justin Lin signed on to direct the third installment in franchise. The hiring of Lin came two weeks after Roberto Orci backed out of the director's chair after co-writing the first two installments.

Orci, who will stay on the project as a produce, had been hired for the directing gig earlier this year after J.J. Abrams exited the sequel due to his commitment to direct Disney's "Star Wars: The Force Awakens." Abrams helmed the first two "Star Trek" reboots in 2009 and 2013.
