Iggy Azalea just wanted to enjoy the holidays with her friends and family. She first needed to give a definite response to recent criticism about her place in the hip-hop community.
"Most people learn every and anything they can about the subjects they are passionate about, I'm not different," Azalea tweeted on Dec. 22. "I find it patronizing to assume i have no knowledge of something I'm influenced by, but I've also grown up with strangers assuming that."
The "Fancy" singer defended her appreciation and influence of hip-hop on her own music despite the fact that she's a white woman. She also argued against having to answer trivia questions from strangers on Twitter to prove she knows the history of her musical genre.
"I'm also not going to sit on twitter & play hip hop squares with strangers to somehow prove I deserve to be a fan of or influenced by hiphop," she tweeted. "I would have to be an idiot or incredibly bored to think that would change anyones already cemented opinion of me. I'm neither."
The 24-year-old artist encouraged others to not buy her albums if they don't like her music. "It's entirely up to you what you support and are interested in, thanks if you are interested in me and enjoy my music. i love to hear that!" she tweeted.
Azalea also thanked Will.I.Am and Lupe Fiasco for their support since rapper Azealia Banks reignited her two-year feud with Azalea over the past few weeks.
"That Iggy Azalea s*** isn't better than any f***ing black girl that's rapping today, you know?... Iggy Azalea is not excellent," Banks said during an interview with New York's Hot 97 on Dec. 18.
The interview followed a series of tweets earlier this month by the "212" rapper who asked Azalea, "I just really want to know what your fascination with Black women is..." She continued, "Why do you want to act like us? I need to know... Why do you imitate us in such a way that I feel like you are actually making fun of us? Why?"
Azalea eventually signed off from her Twitter rant and return to spending time with people she knows in "real life."
"now, if you guys don't mind... I'm on my Christmas break enjoying it with people i actually KNOW... in REAL life. you should do the same."
