Everyone knows that Jim Harbaugh's time as head coach of the San Francisco 49ers is coming to a fast-approaching end. Everyone also knows that the University of Michigan is desperate to have their former quarterback take over the program and restore it to its former glory.
And if you didn't know, you probably do now.
Harbaugh won't comment on his coaching future, but Michigan is doing everything it can to stay in the hunt. U-M officials sent Harbaugh a "Happy Birthday" tweet yesterday just to let him know they're still thinking about him.
Despite the nice gesture, Harbaugh still remains tight-lipped and hasn't "participated in any of the speculation, the unnamed sources, the rumors," regarding his professional future. Perhaps it's time he starts. The 49ers close out the regular season against the Arizona Cardinals this Sunday. "Black Monday," in which several NFL coaches receive their walking papers, is the next day.
Michigan reportedly offered Harbaugh a six-year deal worth $48 million, which would make him the highest paid coach in college football at nearly $2 million more than Alabama's Nick Saban. 49ers general manager Trent Baalke confirmed Monday that Michigan officials have reached out to Harbaugh about their coaching vacancy.
"I think the University of Michigan, in reach out, did handle it correctly," Baalke said. "As I look at it, guys, it's very simple: He's the head football coach of the San Francisco 49ers...
"Our focus is on this last game. We'll address next season after this season is over, and not until then. We'll deal with this at the end of the season."
