Tesla to Upgrade Roadster Model with Doubled Range

Tesla Motors CEO Elon Musk officially confirmed Thursday that the Roadster model will soon have its range upgraded from 244 miles to about 400 miles.

The electric carmaker hasn't produced a Roadster since January 2012, when it stopped selling the vehicle due to low sales, with a company filing showing that only 2,150 units were sold through the end of 2011, according to CNN. The company instead chose to increase production for its Model S, which has seen a great deal of success since its introduction.

An upgrade to the Roadster's lithium battery pack is believed to be responsible for the new range. Musk tweeted that the Model S will not receive a new battery back anytime soon, but the upgrade will be made in the future.

An upgrade to the Roadster, which made its debut in 2008, has been teased since this past June, and now the roughly 2,500 early adopters are being rewarded for their support, The Verge reported.

"Roadster upgrade will enable non-stop travel from LA to SF-almost 400 mile range," Musk tweeted. "Details tmrw. Merry Christmas!"
