Detroit, Michigan, police say a teenage boy was fatally shot while playing with a gun in the basement of a home on Christmas, The Detroit News reported.
The 16-year-old and two friends were playing with the gun in the basement of the Virginia Park neighborhood home at around 1:30 p.m. Thursday when the accidental shooting occurred, Detroit officer Jennifer Moreno told the newspaper.
"They were playing with the gun, and the gun went off, and a round struck the 16-year-old in the head," Moreno said.
The victim was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, but died Friday after being taken off of life support.
None of the names of the people involved have been released.
Police detained and questioned the two friends, ages 17 and 19, after the shooting. The 19-year-old was taken into custody and the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office is expected to bring charges.
Moreno told The Detroit News it's possible the 19-year-old could be charged with manslaughter or second-degree murder, which are charges that are typically brought in similar situations.
The gun was brought into the home by one of the teenagers, but it's not clear who it belongs it, and police were performing background checks to see who it's registered to.
