It's official. Cory and Topanga are back in the highly anticipated "Girl Meets World." The show has been picked up by the Disney Channel and is scheduled to premiere its first episode next year, USA Today reports. The new show is a spinoff of the wildly popular show "Boy Meets World" which ran in the 1990s. In the new series Cory (played by Ben Savage) and Topanga (played by Danielle Fishel) will play their original characters but not as teenagers. The two will be parents of a teenaged daughter named Riley (played by Rowan Blanchard). Sabrina Carpenter will play Riley's best friend Maya.
The show's creators are Michael Jacobs and April Kelly who were on the original as well.
"'Boy Meets World' and its story of adolescent self-discovery resonated with an entire generation of tweens. In the same way audiences fell in love with Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence. We look forward to introducing our views to their daughter, Riley Matthews... and building a memorable connection with a whole new generation of fans," Disney Channels Worldwide executive vice president Adam Bonnett said in a statement.
"Girl Meets World" will take place in New York where Riley and Maya are in middle school. Her father, Cory, is the girls' new history teacher and her mother, Topanga, owns an after-school gathering place that specializes in pudding. Cory and Topanga also have another child together.
"'Girl Meets World' is a new show for a new generation that will be rooted in the same kind of honest, comedic storytelling about coming of age and the importance of family and friendship that made 'Boy Meets World' so popular," Jacobs said in the statement.
According to "E! News," Rider Strong, who played Cory's bad boy BFF Shawn Hunter, might make an appearance on the show. It had been previously reported that he would not be returning to the spin-off series even though fans were dying to see him on the TV again. When "E! News" asked Strong if he would be making an appearance on the show he said he has been talking about with the producers.
"I feel like I should show up at some point and finish the storyline," he said. "I just want it to be done right. I really want it to be classy and good. I want it to be done right. I really want it to be classy and good. I want it to be something that makes fans proud."
How does he think his character will reappear in the new series? Getting into some trouble and dragging his pal Cory along with him, who is a father of two in the new show.
"We've talked about it a little bit. I think he's got to be in trouble of some kind and he's got to pull Cory into trouble. That's definitely the way it's going to be because that's always how it went," he said. "I'd like to see him happier. I feel like Shawn was destined for tragedy. I mean, gosh, they killed my father, my mother abandoned me, my girlfriend and I broke up at the end of the show. They really just made Shawn's life hell. It would be good if he's trouble but in general is happy."
