Police Officer Fatally Shoots 15-Year-Old in Chicago's South Side [VIDEO]

A Chicago police officer shot and killed 15-year-old Michael Westley who was reportedly armed with two handguns in the South Side's Englewood neighborhood.

The shooting began around 10:50 p.m. on Sunday in the 6700 block of South Sangamon Street, according to a statement police News Affairs made to CBS Chicago.

Sounds of gunshots cued officers to respond to South Sangamon where they saw three people running away from the area. Officers issued a description of the three over the radio, the Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said.

Officers saw one teen boy who fit the description running south on Sangamon and attempted to cut him off with a patrol car. At that time, authorities said, Westley turned to run in the opposite direction and officers began chasing him on foot.

As the foot chase ensued, Westley at one point, reportedly turned and pointed a gun at the officers, according to the police statement.

In response, an officer began shooting at the 15-year-old.

Westley was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where he died less than an hour later, at around 11:35 p.m. local time, according to officials at the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

There are no reports that police officers were injured in the shooting.

A woman by the name of Niyah Lewis, 32, identified herself to the Chicago Tribune as Westley's cousin and said the teen was playing football at a Father's Day family gathering outside his grandmother's house earlier that day.

"We know absolutely nothing," Lewis told the Tribune.

Authorities said a .40 caliber handgun was recovered from the scene in addition to a second revolver on the teenager's waistband.

The Independent Police Review authority and Area South detectives have since launched an investigation into the shooting.

According to CBS Chicago, this was the third officer-involved shooting since Friday.

This weekend was the most violent weekend of the year so far in Chicago, according to one Tribune reporter.
