The rumors pertaining to whether or not San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh is planning to leave the NFL and return to the college coaching ranks at the University of Michigan are prevalent.
Conflicting reports have emerged as to the nature of Harbaugh's plans once today's game between his 49ers and Bruce Arians' Arizona Cardinals, a matchup wholly devoid of meaning for Harbaugh and San Francisco, winds down.
Current rumors range from Harbaugh, Michigan and San Francisco having a pact in place that will see Harbaugh and his family return to Ann Arbor and the 49ers receive some type of compensation, to an NFL team like the Oakland Raiders still being very much in the picture.
The most definitive report has come from Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com. Maiocco reports that Harbaugh to Michigan is a done deal, no "ifs, ands or buts."
"Harbaugh is scheduled to be introduced at a press conference Tuesday in Ann Arbor, Michigan," Maiocco writes. "Harbaugh played at Michigan under legendary coach Bo Schembechler from 1982-'86. Recent media reports have placed Harbaugh's contract at six years for as much as $49 million."
A report from ESPN early Sunday threw some cold water on Maiocco's scoop. While conceding that Harbaugh may very well end up as the next coach of the Wolverines, their sources tell them that a meeting has been planned, but nothing definitive has come yet.
Meanwhile, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter tweeted that, "Many ready to ticket Jim Harbaugh to Michigan. It very well might turn out right. But one source last night: "No agreement. No deal done."
Stay tuned, folks. Whatever ends up happening with Harbaugh is sure to go down quickly after the NFL regular season draws to a close.
