It was a violent Father's Day weekend for Chicago as reportedly seven people were killed and more than 40 others were shot, according to NBC News.
Shootings from Friday afternoon into Saturday left another 12 people shot and one killed. The combined resulted in 46 people shot, and seven killed this weekend. Six deaths and 13 of the shootings occurred Saturday, including the fatal shooting of a 16-year-old boy, according to reports.
On Saturday at 10:50 p.m., Ricardo Herrera, 21, was killed and two others were shot in the 2500 block of South Ridgeway Avenue, police said. The two injured were taken to Mount Sinai and their condition was not immediately known.
At 11:45 p.m. Saturday a boy was shot by a gunman on a bicycle in the 4100 block of West North Avenue, police said. The boy identified as Kevin Rivera, 16, was pronounced dead at Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center at after being shot in the left arm and back, officials said.
Chicago Police confirmed Sunday that Rivera had gang affiliations and his death was ruled a homicide. No arrests have been made in this case.
Todd Wood, 40, was killed in another shooting Saturday and three others were treated for gunshot wounds at area hospitals when a gunman opened fire in a local nightclub. One person is in critical condition and no arrests have been made, officials said.
At 12:30 a.m. Sunday, an 18-year-old man was shot in the head, chest and shoulder in a drive by shooting that also injured a 22-year-old woman in the thigh, according to officials. The string of shootings came as Chicago reportedly has seen an overall decrease in violent crimes.
According to reports, Chicago police spokesman Adam Collins insisted they are working hard to catch the criminals and noted the city has posted its lowest homicide totals in years in 2013.
