There were a lot of big moments in TV this year and a ton of jaw-dropping scenes that left us screaming, crying and yelling "WTF." From the entire final season of "Sons of Anarchy" to "How I Met Your Mother's" finale shocker, 2014 was full of surprises.
As the year comes to an end, HNGN picked out some of the most tweetable, heartbreaking and shocking moments from our favorite TV shows. Check out our list below and tell us which moments left you completely shocked.
1. "Game of Thrones"- The Mountain v. The Viper
By now nothing should shock us about HBO's "Game of Thrones" but George R.R. Martin continues to leave us shocked (and at times a little nauseous). Last year, it was the Red Wedding that left us screaming at the TV but this year Martin treated us with a brutal fight between Gregor "The Mountain" Clegane and Oberyn Martell. The sword fight alone had us sitting on the edge of our seats, but the ending caught us completely off guard when a dying Gregor tripped Oberyn and then gauged his eyes out until his head literally exploded into pieces.
2. "How I Met Your Mother"- The Mother was dead (this entire time)
It took "How I Met Your Mother" nine seasons to finally reveal Ted's wife and the mother of his children. Story after story, Ted hinted about the future Mrs. Mosby but never actually said who she was. Well, in the series finale it was revealed that her name was Tracy McConnell and she met Ted at Robin and Barney's wedding. It was also revealed that Tracy was dead. She died from an undisclosed illness and Ted was sharing the stories with his kids in honor of her.
3. "The Walking Dead"- Beth Greene's death
Beth Greene suffered a shocking death on the midseason finale of "The Walking Dead." She had been trapped at Grady Memorial Hospital with Officer Dawn for the first half of Season 4 but the group had finally tracked her down, thanks to Noah. Well, a trade-off deal didn't go as planned when Dawn asked Rick and Co. to hand over Noah. They did but Beth tried to take down Dawn with a pair of scissors and the cop fired her gun sending a bullet straight into Beth's head. Nothing saddened us more than Maggie's screams as Daryl carried Beth's body out of the hospital.
4. "The Good Wife"- Courtroom shooting spree
It's safe to say no one saw this death coming on "The Good Wife." During the Mar. 23 episode Will Gardner was shot and killed inside a courtroom. He was arguing the innocence of Jeffrey Grant - who was first introduced in Season 4 when he was accused of killing Dan Littlejohn - when things went terribly wrong. Jeffrey snapped, grabbed a gun from a courtroom officer and started shooting. One of the victims was Will.
5. "Sons of Anarchy"- Everything about the final two episodes
Jax was a man on a mission this season. He was determined to avenge the death of his wife Tara (which made our list last year) but his thirst for blood ended with a lot of people dead and a shocking suicide that we never saw coming. In the penultimate episode of the series finale, Jax shot Unser in the chest when he wouldn't leave him alone with his mom Gemma, who killed Tara. He then shot Gemma in the head. The show ended with Jax - being chased by a horde of police cars - intentionally riding his motorcycle into a truck killing himself.
6. "How to Get Away with Murder"- Murder Night
The entire first half of "How to Get Away with Murder" has been leading up to Murder Night and who killed Sam, Annalise's husband. Well, there was a lot that went down on Murder Night including Michaela thinking she accidentally killed Sam when she pushed him over the second floor balcony. Sam wasn't dead and tried to strangle Rebecca. To stop him, Wes grabbed the immunity idol and hit Sam over the head, killing him. The most shocking part? When Wes went back to get the trophy, Annalise was there and didn't seem upset that her husband (who may have killed Lila) was dead.
7. "House of Cards"- Subway Murder
The second season of "House of Cards" began with a shocking development for journalist Zoe but unfortunately it also led to her grisly death. During the premiere episode, she went to a subway station to meet Frank Underwood to question him about the death of congressman Peter Russo. Clearly, Frank wasn't there to confess and when Zoe asked if he murdered Russo, Frank shoved her in front of a moving train, killing her.
8. "Mad Men"- Nipple in a Box
We always knew that Michael Ginsberg on "Mad Men" was a little odd but he took crazy to a whole new level when he cut off his own nipple and gifted it to his boss. Michael was starting to freak out over the company installing a giant IBM computer because he thought it posed a threat to him. He was also convinced that the computer was turning the men in the office to homosexuals so he made it his mission to get Peggy pregnant. The only problem: Peggy wasn't onboard so Michael decided to remove the "valve" that was sending "waves of data" to his brain. Michael then sliced off his right nipple and put it in a jewelry box for Peggy.
9. "Agents of SHIELD"- Skye's big reveal
During the midseason finale of Marvel's "Agents of SHIELD" it was revealed that Skye's true identity is Daisy Johnson, or the superhero Quake. During the episode, Skye also finally came face-to-face with her father who revealed that he was Calvin Zabo, the supervillain Mr. Hyde.
10. "The Leftovers"- Gladys is stoned to death
"The Leftovers" has constantly pushed the envelope but one scene left us utterly speechless. In the episode "Gladys," the title character is tied to a tree and stoned to death. There have been more shocking scenes on TV than that but the visuals of Gladys' death left us a little shaken up. She was hit with 13 rocks and every gruesome blow was aired. The scene was so horrific for some that it caused an Entertainment Weekly TV critic to quit watching the show.
