Five Die In Blaze At Texas Senior Complex

Five people died Sunday morning after a fire broke out at a senior complex in Texas.

Ten other residents of the Wedgwood Senior Apartments in Castle Hills suffered injuries and remain hospitalized, USA Today reported.

Bexar County Fire Marshal spokeswoman Laura Jesse said some residents were unaccounted for Sunday night.

Firefighters responded to the fire at approximately 6 a.m. They evacuated the 11-story high-rise building for people 55 and older.

About 75 people were evacuated, with firefighters carrying some of the elderly residents out windows and down ladder trucks.

The Castle Hills Fire Department was the first to respond to the scene, according to ExpressNews.com.

However, about 47 units from the San Antonio Fire Department and other emergency responders from around the San Antonio area, including Balcones Heights, Leon Valley and Schertz, helped.

The cause of the blaze is under investigation, but has caused significant damage.

City buses transported about 150 residents to Churchill High School, while others were taken to a hotel.

San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood said at a news conference that it was amazing more lives had not been lost in the blaze.

The Wedgwood Senior Apartments building is about 50 years old and is home to about 700 people, ExpressNews.com reported.
