The NFL rumor mill is truly abuzz today, as coaches around the league - Rex Ryan, Mike Smith and Marc Trestman - have their fates decided by men in suits with little to no actual knowledge of the game.
One coach who has apparently managed to avoid the keen edge of the axe is New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin.
Coughlin's Giants went 6-10 this season and have won only 13 games in the past two seasons.
Despite the poor recent record, Dan Graziano of ESPN is reporting that Coughlin has been told by management that he is safe - but that reprieve may not extend to the rest of his current coaching staff.
"Tom Coughlin has been told that he will return to Giants in 2015, but still has a meeting with [team president, CEO and co-owner] John Mara today re: potential staff changes."
Coughlin has built up a wealth of goodwill in New York thanks to an overall regular season record of 96-80 and two Super Bowl victories in 11 seasons. That goodwill will apparently extend at least one more year for the 68-year-old Coughlin.
It appears as though general manager Jerry Reese will remain safe as well.
"So there's still nothing official, but it looks like exactly what we expected: Reese and Coughlin returning, possible coaching staff changes," Ralph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News tweeted.
There's no word yet on where those potential coaching staff changes could come, though the defensive side of the ball seems most likely - the team finished 18th against the pass and 30th against the run.
The offense, under first-year coordinator Ben McAdoo, took time to gel. But after some early season bumps, and thanks to the emergence of rookie wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. and running back Andre Williams, and factoring in next season's expected return to health of electrifying veteran Victor Cruz, it seems on the path to dominance.
