Tesla Planning to Upgrade Model S Top Speed to 155 MPH

Tesla continues to focus on improving its electric cars, this time saying it will upgrade the software in its Model S vehicles to give the car a greater top speed.

While the Model S 85D and P85D Model can currently go from zero to 60 in 3.2 seconds and can reach 130 miles per hour, the free upgrade will give these vehicles the ability to reach 155 mph, according to The Los Angeles Times.

The 85D has a more powerful battery and longer range than the regular Model S and can produce just about the same 380 horsepower thanks to its dual motor, and the P85D also has a larger battery and can produce 691 horsepower.

Tesla said in an online statement that the top speed upgrade will come free of charge, The Los Angeles Times reported.

"This free update will be available for the lifetime of the car (not limited to the first owner)," the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company said. "Additionally, an over-the-air firmware upgrade to the power electronics will improve P85D performance at high speed above what anyone outside Tesla has experienced to date."

The P85D was able to achieve a torque level of 864 pound-feet in an independent dynamometer test this week, though it had trouble maintaining the torque level, auto blog Drag Times stated.

The 85D and P85D are currently available for $85,770 and $106,570, before rebates, respectively.
