Sprint launched its 4G LTE service in 22 new cities across the United States and hopes to expand further in the coming months.
Sprint, a global wireless and wireline provider of communication services, announced the expansion of its all-new 4G LTE network across 22 new cities in the United States offering faster data speeds, reliable coverage and stronger wireless signals.
With the addition of 22 new markets, the carrier's total now reaches 110 markets across the nation. While major carriers like Verizon and AT&T have been in the 4G LTE race for more than a year, the competition is tough for Sprint to make it to the top. But the addition of new markets covers some long-neglected areas, which may give Sprint a regional edge.
The 4G LTE service launched in 22 cities across the U.S. covers Miami, Tampa, Sebring and Palatka in Florida, New Orleans and Baton Rouge in Louisiana, Centralia and Longview in Washington, Clarksville and Kingsport in Tennessee, Corsicana in Texas; Dalton Georgia, Dunn and Raleigh in North Carolina, St. Joseph, Benton Harbor, Lansing and East Lansing, Michigan, Napa in California, St. Cloud in Minnesota and Warsaw in Indiana.
Sprint 4G LTE coverage will not rest on its laurels and the carrier emphasized that that it will be bringing the service to 13 new cities in the coming months. The next expansion will include select cities across the states of Michigan, Washington, Texas and Wisconsin. Sprint hopes to serve 200 million people with its LTE services by the end of 2013.
"Today's announcement means that more Americans will experience the speed and power of Sprint 4G LTE," Bob Azzi, senior vice president, network, Sprint, said in a press release. "Sprint is committed to delivering the latest technology through a nationwide LTE buildout, and providing new cell sites that are more compact and energy efficient. Our network build with new 3G and 4G LTE not only provides improved wireless service, it is also expected to reduce Sprint's total energy demand and the company's carbon footprint."
In terms of LTE coverage, Verizon dominates the U.S. wireless market with coverage in almost 500 areas, trailed by AT&T covering 260 markets.
