Possum Drop In North Carolina Will Go On, But Modified To Appease PETA (PHOTOS)

The community of Brasstown, N.C. has paid homage to the ball drop in Times Square for the last 20 years with a drop of their own - a Possum Drop.

The town of 240 people, located about 100 miles from Asheville, celebrates the New Year by lowering a Plexiglas case containing a live opossum from a pole at Clay's Corner Convenience Store, according to Wall Street Journal, but the "hillbilly homage" will be a bit different this year.

The alcohol-free Possum Drop draws about 4,000 people and Logan hopes this year will be a success, according to WSJ. The event features gospel singing, patriotic music and an annual Miss Possum contest where local men compete dressed in ladies' formal wear, complete with makeup, wigs and high heels. "Don't call it a drag show, though," Logan told WSJ. "It's Southern gentlemen dressed up like Southern ladies."
