An outfielder for the Kansas City Royals underwent wrist surgery on Tuesday after recently aggravating an injury. One of the drug suppliers for Biogenesis ringleader Anthony Bosch was sentenced to prison time.
Alex Gordon, who will enter his ninth year with Kansas City in 2015, had surgery on his right wrist to repair an extensor retinaculum. The 30-year-old experienced discomfort in the same wrist during the middle of the 2014 season, but played through the injury and didn't miss much playing time. However, he aggravated the injury during his winter training sessions and had the procedure done on Tuesday by Dr. Bruce Toby at the University of Kansas Hospital.
Gordon should be ready for Opening Day on April 6, but it's unknown when he'll be able to participate in spring training. The two-time All-Star and four-time Gold Glove winner slashed .266/.351/.432 with 19 home runs and 74 RBIs during the regular season. He's in the final year of a four-year contract he signed with Kansas City before the 2012 season. He'll earn $12.5 million in 2015 and has a $12.5 million team option for 2016.
As baseball goes on, the federal government is continuing to punish those involved in the Biogenesis Scandal that resulted in 14 simultaneous suspensions during the 2013 season. The latest victim is Jorge Velazquez, who was sentenced to less than 2 ½ years in prison on Tuesday after pleading guilty to conspiring to distribute testosterone and admitting to being a drug supplier for Biogenesis of America owner Anthony Bosch.
Velazquez was one of the men taken into custody back in August when the Drug Enforcement Administration made a string of arrests involving those tied to the operation. Seven men were charged with conspiracy to distribute testosterone and Velazquez is the first to be handed down an official punishment. Bosch was scheduled to be sentenced on December 18, but his lawyers asked the judge to push it back to February since he's in a rehab facility for drug abuse.
More should be given prison time in the near future.
