The Oakland Raiders parted ways with head coach Dennis Allen after the first month of the season. Allen was just 8-28 as Oakland's head coach and his interim replacement, Tony Sparano, went just 3-9 after his departure. As a result, the Raiders are once again looking for a new head coach.
One name that has popped up early on is Eric Mangini. The former head coach of the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns will be the first candidate interviewed by Oakland, according to ESPN. Mangini cut his teeth as a defensive specialist before spending the last two seasons on the offensive staff of the San Francisco 49ers. He may now have just the right amount of seasoning for another crack at a head coaching gig.
"Mangini fits the profile of the type of coaches the Raiders have been connected to," ESPN's Bill Williamson wrote. "They are said to be looking for assistant with head-coaching experience. Among the other names that have been connected to Oakland include Denver defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, Philadelphia offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur and current interim Oakland interim coach Tony Sparano."
Mangini is 33-47 all-time as an NFL head coach. He has coached under Bill Parcells, Bill Belichick and Jim Harbaugh during his career. Despite his underwhelming tenure in Cleveland, Mangini could be the injection of life this dormant franchise needs.
