Taylor Swift salvaged a terrible year in music. Her album "1989" has sold more than 3.66 million copies and, at the 11th hour, managed to surpass the "Frozen" soundtrack as the top-selling album of 2014.
Swift dropped her fifth studio album on Oct. 27 and sold more than 1.28 million copies in the first week, making her the first artist to go platinum in 2014 (Sam Smith squeaked in with 1.21 million copies of his album "In the Lonely Hour"). The album also ended the year on top of the Billboard 200, its seventh time at No. 1.
"1989" made a final push selling 326,000 copies compared to 64,000 sold by "Frozen" in this last week. It's the first time in 20 years that an album topping the sales charts every week was overtaken in the final week of the year ("The Lion King" overtook Ace of Base's "The Sign"), according to Billboard.
The "Shake It Off" singer also had the top-selling album in 2009 with her second studio album, "Fearless." She sold more than 3.22 million copies that year.
The a cappella group Pentatonix also crossed the million copies threshold this year with their holiday album "That's Christmas to Me" to become the fourth best-selling album of 2014. Another Disney soundtrack, Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" rounded out the top five with 898,000 copies sold.
Beyonce's self-titled album that she dropped at the end of 2013 finished in sixth (878,000 copies sold) followed by Barbara Streisand's "Partners" (856,000 copies sold). Streisand's album debuted No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and made her the first artist to have a No. 1 album in each of the last six decades.
Lorde's 2013 release "Pure Heroine" finished at No. 8 (841,000 copies) followed by One Direction's "Four" (814,000) and Eric Church's "The Outsiders" (811,000).
