Florida Woman Decapitated By Her Mentally Ill Son On New Year's Eve

A Florida woman was found decapitated on New Year's Eve - killed with an ax by her son.

Christian Gomez, 23, told police that his mother, 48-year-old Maria Suarez-Cassagne, had been nagging him.

"He was upset because his mother for the last couple of days had been trying to get him to put these boxes in the attic," Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri told Bay News 9. "And because he was mad at her, over her request to put these boxes in the attic, he planned her murder for two days."

Gomez disposed of his mother's head in a trash can, but when her body wouldn't fit in the receptacle, he dragged the rest of her body outside the house.

Suarez-Cassagne was discovered in her Oldsmar, Fla. home by another son, Mario, on Wednesday, who called the police.

Police arrived at 7:30 p.m. Gomez had just left the house on a bicycle. He was arrested a few blocks away, according to Bay News 9.

Gomez has been arrested about 30 times in Pinellas County and has a history of mental illness, according to Bay News 9.

"He was talking as we're talking now, and in a very calm cool way he explained what he did and why he did it and what happened," Gualtieri told Bay News 9. "By talking to him, you wouldn't think that he had any mental illness at all. That's very scary."

Gomez is being held at the Pinellas County Jail on a first degree murder charge.
