UCLA (9-3) had their five-game winning streak snapped in their regular-season finale loss against Stanford, 31-10. The loss prevented the Bruins from playing for the Pac-12 title, something coach Jim Mora admitted was painful.
"That one needed to hurt," he said, according to ESPN. "That one still hurts. That one hasn't gone away. That one is never going to go away."
Although Mora's 14th-ranked team didn't play for a conference title, his team at least has the chance to gain more experience while playing on the national stage.
"We are a young team that is hungry and still developing, and this is just going to be another step in our progression," said Mora. "For us a chance to play a tremendous team on a big stage and I think that is how you grow as a competitor."
No. 11 Kansas State (9-3) suffered a fate similar to UCLA's, having their own winning streak - two games - snapped in their regular-season finale loss at Baylor, 38-27. While it was a tough way to end the regular season, coach Bill Snyder sees Friday as an opportunity to conclude their 2014 campaign on a high note.
"Obviously, finishing the season the right way is very significant," he said. "We have been on both sides of the ledger, and obviously to finish the way you desire too is much more palatable, I think."
