CBS may be close to finding their Supergirl. According to British newspaper The Sun (via Bleeding Cool), actress and model Gemma Atkinson is reportedly the frontrunner to land the role of Kara Zor-El on the upcoming "Supergirl" TV show.
A source told the newspaper that she's "waiting to hear whether she has been cast" to play the title character. Reportedly, the 30-year-old recently auditioned for the part and is a big comic book fan. The source said "Supergirl" is exactly the kind of show Atkinson would love to do.
On Dec. 18, Atkinson posted a photo of herself dressed as Powergirl (the Earth-Two counterpart of Supergirl), with the caption, "I always did want to be a superhero growing up..."
It was previously rumored that "Vampire Diaries" actress Claire Holt was also being considered for the lead role, but other work commitments may prevent her from signing on. Holt also appears on "The Originals" and is preparing for the NBC project "Aquarius."
According to The Sun, Atkinson is also being considered for a role on the long-running British soap opera "Emmerdale." "Supergirl" will debut in the fall with 13 episodes, and it's been hinted by creator Greg Berlanti (who is also showrunner for "The Flash" and "Arrow") that the series could crossover into the universes of Barry Allen and Oliver Queen.
Entertainment Weekly wrote a piece on Berlanti and reported: "Later in the afternoon at his other office on the Warner Bros. lot, Berlanti meets with fellow producer Ali Adler and Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood to go over looks for their upcoming revamp of 'Supergirl.' The show will follow 24-year-old Kara Zor-El, Superman's cousin, and with a twist that could melt fanboy brains, Berlanti says it's possible this 'Supergirl' could enter the worlds of 'Arrow' and 'The Flash.'"
