Convertible Submarine Car Turns Owner into James Bond for $2 Million

If you have a spare $2 million dollars you can buy the ultimate car that drives on land and also underwater.

The Submarine Sports Car can reach 75 miles per hour on land and two knots underwater, powered by an electric motor.

The car was inspired by the Lotus submarine car driven by James Bond in the film "The Spy Who Loved Me."

The Submarine Sports Car, sold by Hammacher Schlemmer, floats when driven into water, but with a pull of a lever the car dips down to the underwater depths, according to Union Jack News. Propellers at the rear of the car provide speed of up to two knots at depths of 33 feet.

It is the only car in the world which navigates underwater as easily as it cruises across land. The vehicle is also fitted with propellers at the rear and two water jets mounted behind rotating louvres at the front provide steering and lift.

To complete the Submarine Sports Car's uniqueness, it is equipped with built-in scuba tanks and diving regulators to enable two people to remain underwater for an hour.

It uses an electric motor powered by six 48-volt batteries, enabling it to reach a maximum speed of 75 mph. The two-person capacity car has the same steel chassis used in the Lotus Elise, its interior is impervious to fresh or salt water, and an onboard laser-guided sensor enables the sports car to operate autonomously.

In 2013, billionaire Elon Musk said he paid $989,000 for the actual James Bond Lotus Submarine Car from "The Spy Who Loved Me." He hoped he was able to developing it into an actual transforming car able to drive on land and underwater.

But if you don't have the $2 million, or the courage to drive under the water, you have another choice. Hammacher Schlemmer offers an above-water amphibious car that sells for $135,000.
