Sunken Cargo Ship Crew Presumed Dead After Day Long Search

Eight cargo ship crew members are missing and presumed dead after their ship overturned off the coast of Scotland on Sunday, Yahoo! News reported.

The Cemfjord, a cargo ship hauling cement, sank about 15 miles away from the northeast portion of Scotland. The coast guard, rescue helicopters and lifeboats were all looking for any survivors.

The prow of the cargo ship had been sticking up out of the water, but it is reported that the ship has now completely sunk.

The Marine and Coastguard Agency say there is no sign of any surviving crew members or the ship itself, and its occupants are presumed dead, according to the Guardian.

"The vessel is no longer visible," said a spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. "The coastguard rescue teams are still searching and the helicopters are still up. So the search is still going on."

The spokeswoman said the search has been suspended and now the tragic incident will be investigated. Seven Polish men and one Filipino were aboard.

Brise of Hamburg, which manages the vessel, broke the news to the family of the crew members.

"No distress call was received from the vessel," Brise confirmed on Saturday. "Bad weather prevailed in the area at the time and conditions remain difficult at the scene, with storm-force winds."
