Nest Thermostat to Start Working with Smart Lock, Sleep System, Appliances

"Smart Home" firm Nest has announced that it is adding a list of new integrations to its "Works with Nest" program to allow more third-party devices to work with its products.

Acquired by internet giant Google last year for $3.2 billion, Nest introduced the program last June to give companies and developers the chance to try out its Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Protect smoke and carbon monoxide detector in order to improve their own smart home gadgets, according to AppAdvice.

Among the new integrations is that with the August Smart Lock, which will set your Nest Thermostat to Away mode and set a comfortable temperature once you unlock your door and come inside, you will save energy in the process. The Philips Hue lights will flash on and off whenever Nest Protect senses an issue, and the Withings Sleep System will set the Nest Thermostat at a night-time temperature that will allow you to get a comfortable night's sleep.

Other big-name devices that will now work with Nest products include LG smart refrigerator, as well as its other smart appliances, which will enter power saving mode if Nest detects that no one is home, The Verge reported. Another is Big Ass Fans, which will enter "winter mode" and warm your house up if the thermostat sees that the temperature is going down.

These integrations will be the latest to enter the Works with Nest program, as Nest already works with Jawbone fitness trackers, Dropcam security cameras, Logitech remotes, and other popular gadgets.

August Smart Lock, LG Appliances and Withings are among partners announced to be part of the program as of now, The Verge reported. Partners that will join later in the year include Big Ass Fans, Chargepoint home EV charging stations and Whirlpool appliances.

Nest said that while people have been working on home automation for years, its program is designed for houses that are "more thoughtful and conscious," The Inquirer reported.

"Works with Nest makes it possible for your Nest devices to securely interact with the things you already use every day, inside and outside your home," the company said. "Because when we connect these different parts of your life, we can work behind the scenes to deliver personalized comfort, safety and energy savings. Effortlessly."

Nest fans will be able to learn more about the new Works with Nest integrations at the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show, AppAdvice reported. The trade show will be held in Las Vegas starting tomorrow, Jan. 6, and will end on Friday, Jan. 9.
