Former host of "Mayhem in the AM", radio personality Steak Shapiro was reportedly fired after mocking a former New Orleans Saint Steve Gleason now battling Lou Gehrig's disease.
Shapiro was interviewed Tuesday by CNN where he stated that he would have been offended if he were a listener to his radio show.
"You walk a fine line trying to be somewhat on the edge," Shapiro said. "We blew it. We blew it in a huge way."
The Atlanta's 790 The Zone radio veteran offered an explanation to CNN on how the topic was brought up on the show.
The hosts decided to spoof Gleason's illness, poking fun at the fact that he speaks with a synthetic voice. The segment featured a synthezier and punchlines of an imaginary Gleason telling knock-knock jokes, saying things like "Smother me, do me a favor."
Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as ALS, has hindered many of Gleason's functions, but it hasn't stopped him. Gleason wrote to CNN about the comments. He has adapted the best he can with the disease, noting that he used technology that allowed him to type with his eyes to write the column.
"ALS prevents your brain from talking to your muscles. As a result, muscles die. As a result, every 90 minutes people die," he wrote. "I am a person."
Shapiro did not defend the show's comments on CNN, but said the pressure got the best of him and his radio crew.
"The pressure is to try to do a good radio show, and that wasn't a good moment," Shapiro said. "It was a horrible moment."
Shapiro and the show's two other hosts, Chris Dimino and Nick Cellini, were fired Monday evening.
"790 The Zone, our owners, sponsors and partners in no way endorse or support this kind of content," Rick Mack, the station's general manager, said in a statement."We sincerely apologize to Mr. Gleason, his family and all those touched by ALS."
I love the people and city of New Orleans, always have, always will, @team_gleason I will work tirelessly to make this up to you....

I have so.many people I have to apologize to. I know this is not who I am...but it is who I am today. An apology here means nothing if I... — Chris Dimino (@chrisdimino) June 17, 2013
All three hosts have apologized to Gleason, and the former Saint took to Facebook to respond.
"Received and accepted," Gleason wrote. "We have all made mistakes in this life. How we learn from our mistakes is the measure of who we are."
