Tuna Sold For $37,500 in Tokyo Market Auction

This isn't your average Chicken of the Sea.

Tokyo's famous fish market sold a Bluefin tuna for $37,500 at the first auction of the year, the Daily News reported on Monday.

The 400-pound animal was bought by Kiyoshi Kimura, the owner of a Japanese sushi chain, at the re-opening of the Tsukiji market after a break over the New Year holiday. The owner was the top bidder for the fourth consecutive year in a row.

Kimura said the big purchase wasn't quite as expensive as he thought it would be thanks to a large uptick in tuna fished near the Tsugaru strait this year, The Wall Street Journal reported.

But the tuna's price tag pales in comparison to some of Kimura's other purchases.

In January 2012, he paid $736,700 in the first auction of the year for a tuna. Later in January 2013, he paid $1.76 million for a 222 kilogram tuna, which he holds an all-time record for.

Tuna prices generally soar during the first auction of the year. Kimura was bidding against a restaurant chain owner in Hong Kong before he won the bidding for the fish in Tokyo.

In its 80th year, the Tsukiji market has been open since February 1935. It will be moving to the Toyosu area of Tokyo.
