Natura Pet Products announced on Tuesday that its voluntary pet food recall will include all Innova, Calif. Natural, EVO, Healthwise, Mother Nature and Karma branded dry pet food and biscuit/bar/treat products with expiration dates prior to June 10, 2014 due to a positive salmonella test conducted by the FDA.
Natura Pet Products released the following statement:
We made this decision in part due to a single positive Salmonella test by the FDA on product manufactured April 3. Normally, this would have resulted in retrieval of product manufactured over just a few days. However, we are taking the additional precautionary measure to recall all products in the marketplace. Our first priority is the wellbeing of the pets we serve.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Georgia Department of Agriculture confirmed the positive tests for salmonella in Natura products manufactured at the beginning of April, according to the Clarion Ledger.
Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans that are handling the pet products. People who have come in contact with any of the affected products should contact a healthcare provider if they show symptoms like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or fever.
Pets infected with salmonella may show symptoms like sluggishness, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, vomiting, decreased appetite or abdominal pain. Some animals may not show any of these symptoms.
Owners are urged to contact a veterinarian if their pets have come in contact with these products.
The Natura products are reportedly sold through veterinary clinics and select pet specialty retailers nationwide and in Canada, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, Australia, and Costa Rica, as well as online.
Consumers who have purchased these pet foods should discard them. For additional information, consumers may visit www.naturapet.com. For a product replacement or refund call Natura toll-free at 800-224-6123.
