As promised, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella released its diversity report and just like other technology companies, the majority of its workforce and leadership are males.
Fortune.com reviewed the diversity report and compared it to the other companies such as Google, Twitter, Facebook, Apple, Yahoo and more. It turned out that Microsoft is the most male-dominated workforce at 71 percent; one percent higher than Google, Twitter, and Apple.
"We have work to do at Microsoft and across the industry," wrote Nadella in an internal memo prior to the EEO-1 release. "These numbers are not good enough, especially in a world in which our customers are diverse and global."
Aside from working on the workforce diversity of the company, Nadella also needs to revisit its leadership diversity as the company has the least percentage of females into managerial roles.
Only 17 percent of Microsoft's leadership team are women, compared to other companies that are more than 20 percent. The company's tech team also has lesser female workers at 10 percent compared to other companies that have at least 15 percent. The tech team consists of the programmers, coders, and engineers.
In terms of racial diversity, Microsoft's overall workforce is predominantly white at 61 percent, tied with Google and close to other tech companies. On a positive note, Microsoft's racial diversity in its leadership is more diverse compared to other companies.
Tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, Apple, Yahoo, Twitter, and more are forced to disclose their diversity after the PUSH Coalition, a religious and social development organization led by Rev. Jesse Jackson, criticized them for not hiring enough minorities and women.
Google was first to release its diversity report, followed by Apple and Amazon.
