Syfy, Philips to Use '12 Monkeys' to Control Lighting in Viewers' Living Rooms

Syfy has announced a partnership with Philips that will allow it to broadcast the upcoming "12 Monkeys" television series while putting on a light show in viewers' living rooms.

The debut of the system comes through a partnership with Philips and its line of Hue home lighting products, and it will mark the first time a TV show will interact with viewers' home lighting, according to Entertainment Weekly. By pairing the Syfy sync app on their smartphones or tablets with the Hue LED bulbs, the app will detect audio cues from "12 Monkeys" and translate them to the system; the lighting in the room will then match the scenes in the show.

"Fans will then be enveloped in the onscreen action through ambient lighting effects designed to engage viewers in an entirely new way," Syfy said.

The light show will be provided thanks to a "light track" that makes sure the lights sync with the show's content, A.V. Club Austin reported.

While Syfy used a similar light track for its TV movie "Sharknado 2," this occasion marks the first time Hue has been integrated with a regular TV show.

"12 Monkeys," based on the 1995 film that starred Bruce Willis, will premiere on Syfy on Jan. 16.
