No. 1 Kentucky remains undefeated with a 13-0 record after their 58-50 win at Louisville on Dec. 27. The Wildcats have had nine days off since then, but rust may not be a factor when they host Ole Miss on Tuesday.
"I felt like we were playing a game because we're so competitive," freshman guard Devin Booker said of the intensity of the team's practices, according to the Associated Press. "No one likes to lose and both platoons go at each other hard, and I think that's what's making us better each day."
During their layoff, coach John Calipari also stressed how playing in conference games will feel like a different season.
"He says the games are going to be a lot tougher, they're going to come at us more," said freshman guard Tyler Ulis said. "We've just got to be ready for that and make sure we come ready to play."
On Tuesday, part of being ready will be having game-planned ways to guard the 3-point line.
"If they're making shots, then we have to try to drive them off the 3-point line," Calipari said of the Rebels, who're shooting 41 percent from behind the arc over the last five games. "When you're playing teams that are willing to shoot that many, you just don't know."
Ole Miss, meanwhile, is 9-4 after bouncing back from a loss with a 92-63 blowout Saturday of Austin Peay. For Ole Miss, the key to upsetting Kentucky will solid play from their backcourt and making the most out of makeable shots.
"Even though we've had some quality wins in non-league, we've had some puzzling losses because we've been inconsistent in our guard play," said Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy. "We know we're going to have to go in and make open shots tomorrow night to give ourselves any hope."
