No. 22 Ohio State bounced back from a loss to Iowa with a 77-61 win on Saturday against Illinois. It was a solid performance on offense, thanks to shooting 60 percent from the field and to freshman guard D'Angelo Russell's 22 points.
"I thought all the guys did a really nice job and were great down the stretch for us," said coach Thad Matta, via ESPN. "I think our activity was great and we were able to get out and get deflections. We got the ball out in transition (and) we were able to execute offensively."
As for the deflections, at least some of those are owed to Matta switching from a zone defense to a man-to-man defense. The man-to-man defense is rarely used by Matta, but that doesn't mean fans won't see it again this season.
"He's won a lot more games than we have, so whatever he says goes," said Buckeyes senior forward Sam Thompson. "We haven't really gone over our man-to-man defense the way we have in past years, but every day in practice we guard man-to-man in our five-man set we practice. We were able to pressure a little bit more in man. You have to be really disciplined in zone, which we need to do a little bit better."
Minnesota, meanwhile, is 11-4 after losing two straight. Their latest loss came on Saturday in a 78-58 loss at Maryland.
