"Covert Affairs" has been canceled.
After five seasons on the air, the USA Network has decided not to renew the CIA drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The series starred Piper Perabo, Christopher Gorham and Peter Gallagher.
A source told the publication that the renewal was a "business decision." Despite a strong fan base, the show has seen a decline in viewership, with its recent fifth season only averaging 1.5 million viewers. The final episode in December attracted 1.6 million viewers.
"Covert Affairs" premiered in 2010 with 4.88 million viewers and maintained an average of 6.7 million viewers in its first season.
The cancellation will leave fans disappointed since the fifth season ended with some cliffhanger elements, as Annie (Perabo) was contemplating a marriage proposal and an offer to join a CIA task force, and Auggie (Gorham) was planning to leave the CIA.
"We want the show to continue. We're very proud of this finale. So at least we feel if we didn't come back, we'd be going out on a high note," executive producer Chris Ord told TVLine in December about the season five cliffhangers.
Executive producer Matt Corman told TVLine that he was hoping for a sixth season.
"For us, these characters and the actors we're working with are so infinitely talented that we think we could keep telling stories forever," Corman said. "Maybe we're delusional in that sense, but we just love this show so much. We don't like to think about it in terms of the end."
The network is reportedly making room for new series, which have already been greenlighted for the upcoming year, including "Dig," "Mr. Robot" and "Complications."
