Muhammad Ali Returns From Hospital After Fighting Severe Urinary Tract Infection

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali was released from the hospital Tuesday night after battling a severe urinary tract infection.

"He's in great spirits and enjoying being back home," Ali spokesman Bob Gunnell told The Associated Press. "He's back in his daily routine."

Ali is glad to be home and looking forward to spending his 73rd birthday with family and friends on Jan. 17.

Ali was hospitalized - at an institution whose name was not disclosed - on Dec. 20 for what at the time was believed to be a mild case of pneumonia. Doctors later determined that the three-time world heavy weight champion was actually suffering from a severe urinary tract infection, reported AP.

"The Ali family greatly appreciates the outpouring of support and continued well wishes," Gunnell said in a statement. "They also want to thank the team of doctors and nurses for their exceptional care."

Ali and his wife, Lonnie, have homes in Paradise Valley, Arizona; Berrien Springs, Michigan; and in Louisville, but it was not revealed which of these homes he returned to after his hospitalization.

Ali, who has been battling Parkinson's disease for 30 years, has been making less public appearances over the last few years but he still enjoys getting out and watching sports and visiting friends, reported AP.

When Ali appeared at the Muhammad Ali Humanitarian Awards in his hometown, Louisville, former NFL great Jim Brown told Ali "you're the greatest of all time," reported AP.

Along with Ali's legendary boxing career, he is also known for devoting himself to humanitarian social causes after he retired where he led worldwide missions, mingling with the masses and rubbing elbows with world leaders, reported AP.
