Two bodies were found in West Palm Beach, Fla. on Wednesday at the Alexander W. Dreyfoos Jr. School of the Arts.
Employees at the college found the two bodies at about 6:30 a.m. and immediately alerted authorities, WPTV reported.
One of the bodies found was that of a school's custodian, Palm Beach County School District spokesperson Jason Shockley told the NBC News affiliate.
"It's an open death investigation," West Palm Beach Police spokesperson Capt. David Bernhardt said. "That way, we're not limiting to ourselves what type of investigation we are doing. It could turn out to be a homicide investigation later on, it could just be a normal death investigation."
Bernhardt did not say whether or not the people were murdered, nor if a crime had been committed, as there was no direct evidence to indicate the cause of their deaths.
The two peoples' remains were located in a maintenance area of the school's campus.
Their respective genders and ages have not yet been released.
FBI agents arrived on site shortly after learning of the deaths, but did not remain once they received word that no shooter was on campus.
Police officials and SWAT team members patrolled the school's building all morning.
Dreyfoos graduate Matthew Baquero told WPTV that he knew a few of the custodians at the school and was relatively close to a handful of them.
"I can't believe this is happening at my school. This is stuff that you only see in the news like somewhere in Connecticut, or in another state, but I can't imagine this happening at my school right now."
Florida Public Services Union President Alphonso Mayfield released a statement expressing his equal disbelief.
"Our hearts are broken by the tragic loss of lives at the Dreyfoos School," the statement read. "It is a sad day for our schools, community and our workers. While the investigations are underway and we are anxiously waiting to know the details, our heartfelt condolences go out to the co-workers and families."
