A New York City man was hospitalized Monday night after he tried and failed to kill himself three times, including an attempt to slit his throat with a spatula, police said.
Dwayne Jackson's bizarre night began at around 11:30 p.m. when he started acting strange and suddenly ran out of a friend's home he was visiting in Ewing, New Jersey, Captain Rocco Maruca told the Times of Trenton.
He banged on the door of a 72-year-old woman's Ewing home and asked to use her phone. When she refused, Jackson asked her how to get to Trenton. She gave him directions and tried closing the door, but he blocked it and forced his way into the home, Maruca told the Times of Trenton.
Jackson made his way to the kitchen where he found a cake spatula and tried slitting his throat. When that failed, he picked up a butcher knife and stabbed himself in the stomach, police said.
But before he made another move a 76-year-old man emerged from a bedroom with a loaded handgun.
A struggle ensued between Jackson and the elderly man, who open fired twice but missed the intruder. Jackson eventually wrenched the gun away from the homeowner and shot himself with the weapon positioned underneath his chin, Maruca told the newspaper.
Jackson was found lying face down when police arrived. On Tuesday the 48-year-old was listed in stable condition at Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton.
The elderly man and woman were not harmed in the incident, Maruca told the newspaper.
