NHL RUMORS: Montreal Canadiens; Jaromir Jagr Trade A 'Great Fit?'

The Montreal Canadiens (26-12-2) went on a recent six-game tear that saw them put resounding beat downs on a handful of the NHL's more woe begotten squads, but also a couple of the league's elite teams - namely the New York Islanders and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

They're now second in both the Atlantic Division and the Eastern Conference, two points behind the surging Tampa Bay Lightning, who also happen to be the team that ground the Canadiens winning binge to a halt on Tuesday - though the Habs still have two games in hand.

The Canadiens and coach Michel Terrien have to be pretty happy with their young squad after juggling some lines later in Dec. - Nathan Beaulieu was promoted to the second defensive pairing with Sergei Gonchar, meaning he's probably a permanenet NHL resident, and Tomas Plekanec took over the center spot between David Desharnais and P.A. Parenteau.

But could Habs GM Marc Bergevin be working the phones behind the scenes to add a piece or two to help bolster the team for the season's second half?

And could a certain big, future Hall of Fame Czech winger with over two decades of NHL experience be just such a piece, and further, a pretty great fit in Montreal?

"If Marc Bergevin could add a body like Jaromir Jagr, who's a big guy who's still scoring goals at an astonishing rate for a 42-year-old, and you could do it without ridiculously mortgaging the future, then sure, that's a great move," said TSN's Bob McKenzie on an episode of Montreal's TSN 690, as transcribed by NicholsOnHockey.com.

"It fits on a number of different levels, depending on what the price is."

The Canadiens went deep into the playoffs last season - eventually losing in the Eastern Conference finals to the New York Rangers - and seem to have an even better team this season. They're just 19th in goals per game though, and Jagr, who has nine goals and 16 assists, putting him on pace to finish with about 50 points this season, could add some nice scoring touch depth.

The former Penguin, Capital, Ranger, Flyer, Bruin, Star and now current Devil is also the consummate professional who trains like a champion and attacks every shift like it's his last in the NHL.

For a fairly young group like the Habs, adding a player of Jagr's skill and experience - without forking over too much to Lou Lamoriello in the process - could be a master stroke both for the remainder of this season and for the continued development of many of the players, some of whom weren't even born when Jagr first entered the league, on the roster.
