Best Buy is recalling 5,100 MacBook Pro replacement batteries because of a possible fire risk after several incidents were reported.
Best Buy, the biggest U.S. specialty electronics retailer, recalled 5,100 replacement batteries for Apple MacBook Pro over fire risk after 13 such incidents were reported by consumers. One incident also resulted in serious damage to a consumer's leg, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Maryland-based independent agency of the U.S. government said in a statement Wednesday that the ATG lithium-ion batteries can catch fire while charging.
Once a product has been recalled by the CPSC, it is illegal for any organization to resell or attempt to resell the product to the consumers. The agency strictly advised the consumers to stop using the product and to remove the battery from the computer as an immediate precaution. Best Buy is informing all customers about the defect. Consumers can also contact Best Buy for a replacement or can opt for a $50 Best Buy gift card as a full refund
The recall affects both the black and white ATG lithium-ion MacBook Pro replacement batteries with model number "MC-MBOOK13B" printed on the label of the black battery and "MC-BOOK13W" on the white ones, according to the CPSC recall statement.
The batteries were made in China and imported by a Las-Vegas based company, BTI Corp. The batteries were sold at Bestbuy.com and Partstore.com or delivered to the customers via Geek Squad Protection fulfillments at Best Buy from September 2008 to June 2012.
Apple or Best Buy did not directly comment on the incident.
