No. 12 Kansas bounced back from their blowout loss on Dec. 22 to Temple with two straight wins, defeating Kent St. on Dec. 30 and UNLV on Jan. 4. With a 11-2 record, Jayhawks coach Bill Self believes sophomore guard Frank Mason III's consistency is a big reason for the team's success so far this season.
"Our most consistent player this year so far? Frank, hands down," Self said, via ESPN. "I don't want to say that he's our best talent because I still think Perry (Ellis), when he's playing well, can put up numbers. But Frank's been our most valuable player easily, and (that's) in large part because when Devonte' (Graham) went down, we didn't have another point guard, really, in our program."
Mason is averaging 12.4 points and 4.2 assists per game, a noticeable improvement from his freshman season when he averaged 5.5 points and 2.1 points per game and while playing a less significant role on the team.
"I always knew I was capable of being this good, but I still don't think I'm playing good," said Mason. "I'm just doing what my teammates need me to do, coach wants me to do."
Baylor also has an 11-2 but is ranked No. 21. The Bears had their six-game winning streak ended on Saturday in a 73-63 loss at Oklahoma, whom they opened conference play against.
"We missed a lot of layups, but there's a reason you miss a lot of layups - the pressure they put on, the contests they have," said Baylor coach Scott Drew.
