NFL RUMORS: Cleveland Browns Kyle Shanahan; Fired Over Disinterest In Manziel, Charlie Weis A Replacement?

Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel just can't keep himself out of the spotlight.

This time though, it might not actually be his fault.

Pat McManamon of ESPN is reporting that a large part of the reason for offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's ousting - announced Thursday - was the difference of opinion he and the Cleveland front office had when it came to Manziel.

The front office - no specific names were mentioned - wanted Manziel to be the starter, but Shanahan and quarterbacks coach Dowell Loggins, also axed, did not believe they could win with the young signal-caller under center.

"Shanahan felt the decision to start Manziel was forced on the coaching staff, and that the year-long insistence to play him when he wasn't ready wore on Shanahan, a team source said."

The source said the decision to play Manziel in Week 14 was not a popular one and coaches felt continuous pressure throughout the season to play the first-round pick.

As for potential replacements for Shanahan, Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports pointed to former New York Jets, New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator, Charlie Weis.

Weis most recently joined the college ranks as the head coach of Notre Dame and then Kansas. He never found major success in either spot, leading the Fighting Irish to a 35-27 record and the Jayhawks to a mark of 6-22.

Weis began his NFL career as an offensive assistant under the great Bill Parcells, before really making a name for himself under head coach Bill Belichick with the Patriots, where he was a member of three Super Bowl-winning teams.

Weis has always had a strong ability to build the ground game, but other than his time with Tom Brady in New England, has never really developed a true, franchise signal-caller, something the Browns and Manziel are most likely interested in.
