Subaru Recall Issued to Fix Rusty Brake Lines, Covers 199,000 Vehicles

Subaru has issued another recall for its cars and SUVs in order to fix a fluid leak in rusty brake lines.

The recall covers about 199,000 vehicles for a leak that can cause longer stopping distances, according to the Associated Press. A document posted Thursday by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that salty water can splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, which can cause rust and leaks.

Subaru said drivers will receive an alert from a light on the instrumental panel about the brake line leaks. While brakes will continue to work with the leaks, drivers will have to push the pedal harder to stop.

The announcement comes a year after Subaru had a recall for the same issue, which stemmed from incomplete repair instructions given to dealers, the AP reported.

Vehicles covered in the recall include the 2009-2013 Forester, 2008-2011 Impreza and the 2008-2014 WRX and WRX-STI models. These vehicles are registered in a total of 20 U.S. states, which include New York, New Jersey, Washington D.C., West Virginia, Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Indiana, Iowa, Missouri and Minnesota.

Subaru will have dealers fix the brake lines with a corrosion-fighting wax, free of charge.
