Shailene Woodley ‘Bummed’ Mary Jane Watson Cut From ‘Spider-Man 2’

Just a few days after the release dates were revealed for "The Amazing Spider-Man 3" and "4," producers announced that the superhero's love interest, Mary Jane Watson, would be cut from "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Shailene Woodley, who was set to play the Watson, had already begun filming scenes for the movie when she got the news.

"Of course I'm bummed," she told Entertainment Weekly. "But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason. MJ only appeared in a few scenes and I wouldn't trade the experience of working with Andrew and Emma for three days on set for the world. Based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing MJ until the next film."

Watson's character won't be totally written off from the series and is expected to return for the third movie but, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Woodley might not be returning for the role. There doesn't seem to be any hard feeling on either part. According to the website, the director Marc Webb, cut Watson out to focus on Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy, who was another love interest.

"I made a creative decision to streamline the story and focus on Peter and Gwen and their relationship," Webb said. "Shailene is an incredibly talented actress and while we only shot a few scenes with Mary Jane, we all love working with her."

Even though Woodley will no longer be filming for the "Spider-Man" movie she will still be extremely busy working on her other projects. She will play Beatrice Prior in the movie "Divergent," based off of Veronica Roth's best-selling young adult novel which is said to be the next "Hunger Games." She will also star in "The Spectacular Now" and "The Fault In Our Stars."

Woodley's name has also been mentioned as a fan-favorite to play Anastasia Steele in the upcoming "Fifty Shades of Grey." Reportedly she was rumored to be a favorite of E.L. James after she saw her performance in "The Descendants."
