Oakland Raiders owner Mark Davis won't be rushed.
He's going to pick a new head coach sometime in the near future - mostly because, well, he's got no other choice - but he's not going to make a decision simply to make a decision.
Davis, according to Jerry McDonald of InsideBayArea.com, said that he's going to continue to request interviews, weigh the various NFL coordinators and assistant options he's so far amassed, and make a definitive decision when the time is right.
But he won't be swayed by outside concerns.
Like, for instance, that the somewhat uncertain nature of the team's current front office structure will make the job less appealing to potentially interested candidates.
"I've never heard that,'' Davis said.
Davis was almost entirely uninvolved in the process the last time the franchise made a new head coach hire in 2012. GM Reggie McKenzie eventually settled on Dennis Allen - in hindsight an unwise move - and Davis has now injected himself fully into the decision making.
But, he won't be rushed, or put a timetable on when a choice could come.
"It could be tomorrow. It could be three weeks from now," Davis said Thursday night, according to McDonald.
Recently, Davis, former Raiders coach and Hall of Famer John Madden, McKenzie and team execs Marc Badain, Dan Vetrelle and Tom Delaney sat down for the second time with interim coach Tony Sparano.
Sparano, who has been in consistent contact with Davis and the team since the regular season ended, remains a realistic candidate for the position.
Davis and the team have also interviewed Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, Indianapolis Colts offensive coordinator Pep Hamilton, former NFL coach Mike Shanahan and 49ers tight ends coach and former NFL coach Eric Mangini recently.
Davis has reiterated that he is interested in candidates with experience as an NFL coach, but doesn't consider himself tied to the idea.
