Jaycee Chan, the son of Chinese actor Jackie Chan, was sentenced to six months in prison for a drug offense. The sentencing was announced at the Dongcheng District People's Court in Beijing after he was convicted of providing a venue for drug dealers, Xinhuanet reports. Jaycee was also fined 2,000 yuan (about $320 U.S. dollars).
During the trial, Jaycee confessed that between 2012 and 2014 he allowed people to take drugs at his home four different times. According to Xinhuanet, he also told the court that he deserved to be punished and hoped the public could forgive him.
"I have broken the law and should be punished," Jaycee said, according to the New York Times. "After I return to society, I won't offend again, because I would disappoint my family and friends once again."
It was previously reported that Jaycee could face up to three years in prison, but the court showed him leniency because he had no prior criminal record and he confessed. Jackie has not publicly responded to his son's sentencing, but back in August when Jaycee was arrested, the actor offered an apology.
"First, I want to thank everyone for their support. For my son, Fang Zuming (Jaycee), to get into such trouble, I'm very angry and astonished," he wrote. "As a public figure, I'm ashamed, as a father, I'm heartbroken, I can't begin to describe his mother's pain. I hope young people will take a lesson from Zuming and stay away from drugs."
"I failed to be a good father and I deserve the blame," he added. "I will take the responsibility and apologize to the public on behalf of Jaycee!"
Jaycee was arrested along with two other people, 23-year-old movie star Kai Ko and a suspected drug user surnamed Sun, Xinhuanet reports. Jaycee and Ko both tested positive for marijuana and admitted to using the drug.
The arrests came after Chinese President Xi Jinping declared a crackdown on illegal drugs. More than 7,800 people have been detained in Beijing, according to the Associated Press.
