A Texas man, "distraught" over his son's medical condition, barricaded himself and the patient in a room for hours at the Tomball Regional Medical Center Saturday.
According to CBS News, the Harris County Sheriff's Office said the unidentified man trapped himself and his son in his son's room in the critical care unit at the hospital.
Around 7 p.m. Saturday the situation became threatening, Harris County Lt. Joe Ambriz said, but he did not release any further details about the situation or the son's medical condition.
Around 11 p.m. the man surrendered to authorities and they placed him into custody. He did not have a weapon on him. However, a Tomball Police Department spokesman said earlier in the evening that the man had entered the hospital with a gun.
The situation was first labeled a hostage situation, but authorities would later retract that statement. No one sustained any injuries during the standoff, The Huffington Post reported.
The man did not hold any employees hostage and the hospital was not under lockdown. However, the rooms next to the man were evacuated.
The man refused to comply with police demands at first, but police said he negotiated with them and the situation was contained. He had not made any demands during the time of the standoff at the medical center. The Tomball Regional Medical Center is about 30 miles from downtown Houston.
