The first ever National Championship game of the college playoff era features the No. 2 and No. 4 teams, Oregon and Ohio State. The Ducks dismantled No. 3 Florida State last weekend in a 59-20 blowout, in which 2014 Heisman-winning quarterback Marcus Mariota passed for 338 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 62 yards and one touchdown.
Ohio State, meanwhile, dealt No. 1 Alabama a 42-35 upset last week to earn a spot in the championship game.
Oregon coach Mark Helfrich sees at least one similarity in the two teams, which head into Monday's game with 13-1 records.
"We've been playing, both our program and Ohio State have played with that kind of early loss, and your back was against the wall to get to this point every play of every game, the entire rest of the season, it was to the those words: do or die," he told the Associated Press.
The Buckeyes will present Mariota a different challenge, thanks to the staunch defense Ohio State.
"They've got an awesome front seven," Mariota said. "Big, physical guys that really control the line of scrimmage."
One of those big, physical guys up front is All-American defensive end Joey Bosa, who said the Buckeyes took a different approach in their week-long preparation for Mariota and the Ducks.
"This is much more of a business trip, this time around," he said. "Last week we went, we hung out and had some fun. This week it's all about business; no going out, no messing around. We're just preparing."
The winner on Monday won't just walk away with the National Championship trophy; they'll also make college football history.
